Field trip exposes children to music, arts in Los Angeles
Four children had a special night out on the town recently, enjoying dinner, a concert, and a famous Los Angeles art installation. The kids, ages 11 to 15, are guests at Home Again, the Rescue Mission Alliance San Fernando Valley’s family shelter.
But before they headed out, Mission staff members Yadira Mena (case manager) and Cristina Moreno (intake coordinator) took the foursome to Reseda Super Thrift so they could pick out their outfits—formal attire—for the night. They were then escorted to the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills to enjoy a classical music concert, featuring the full iPalpiti Orchestra, conducted by Eduard Schmieder.
Logan, 13, said he enjoyed the whole experience. “I liked our clothes and I liked the music,” he said. “I liked that it was a night field trip. I have never done that before. It was amazing and so fun. One day I will drive a fancy car like the ones we saw near the theater.”
The trip also included dinner at Chickfil- A and a visit to Urban Light, the street light art installation at the entrance of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. “It was fun,” said 14-year-old Amber. “My favorite part was the violin solo. I also enjoyed the LACMA lights.”
Yadira said there was more to the outing than just a fun distraction. “The purpose of our trip was to expose our kids to the fine arts,” said Yadira. “We want them to explore the different ways to express their emotions. The kids were excited to go on a trip that felt very high class and just to be in a new environment.”
