Wade’s Word – October

When most people think about individuals who are homeless, they don’t picture a 6-year-old girl like Kayla. I first saw Kayla and her mom as I was leaving the office a few weeks ago. An Uber dropped them off at our front door with all of their belongings—eight suitcases and boxes in total. Kayla was wearing a peach dress and was cradling a baby doll. Her mom had mascara running down her face from tears that were shed that day.  They had not eaten for the past day and a half. With nowhere else to turn, they came to us. We immediately took them into our emergency shelter, where they had a hot meal and a safe place to sleep for the night. Because of our generous donors and volunteers, we have the pleasure of practicing radical hospitality on a daily basis. For kids like Kayla, having a meal and a safe bed to sleep in each night is life changing.
