From broken to blessed, program residents give back

At 8 a.m. on a brisk Friday morning, RMA San Fernando Valley’s shower trailer quietly enters the Van Nuys Home Depot parking lot. Though the sun has barely risen, a small line has already begun to form – people waiting not just for a warm shower or a fresh haircut, but for a moment of dignity and connection.
Welcoming them are residents from the men’s Life Recovery Program, who arrive with hearts full of purpose. With cheerful teamwork, they set up barber chairs, check people in, and prepare to serve. For many of them, this isn’t just a task – it’s personal.
“This is more than offering basic needs,” shared Oscar Corral, men’s program manager. “It’s about building relationships. We want people to feel seen, respected, and cared for and hopefully take the next steps toward healing, whether that’s through our family shelter or men’s program.”
RMA SFV’s shower trailer is parked all over the Valley throughout the week, offering interested individuals warm showers, meals, hygiene opportunities and supplies, and case management assistance. Often, it’s the beginning of something much bigger—a spark of hope that opens the door to transformation – leading to consideration of our long-term programs.
“A shower may seem small, but it gives someone back their dignity,” Oscar said. “When you’ve gone days or weeks without one, it’s not just physical discomfort – it weighs on your spirit. Offering that moment of relief can mean everything.”
For the men who once stood in that same line, today’s outreach is deeply moving. They remember.
“I know what it’s like to be on the other side,” said Jason, a current program resident who helps coordinate the mobile showers. “I used to watch this very truck drive by, wishing I could have that chance. Now, I’m part of the team. Now, I get to be part of the side that gives help.”
Jose, another resident and a gifted barber, sees his role as both a calling and a blessing. “God gave me this skill, and I get to use it to serve,” he said. “While I’m cutting hair, I listen. I share my story. I tell them about how God and the Mission changed my life. It’s not just about grooming – it’s about connection, encouragement, and planting seeds of faith.
“Sometimes the world sees and judges us by how we look. A fresh shower and haircut give people the encouragement and strength they need to change their life.”
As Jason reflected on his journey, he smiled. “Being part of this – serving others, sharing my story – it’s like I’ve found my purpose. I feel truly grateful. This ministry gave me a second chance, and now I get to help offer that to someone else. It just feels amazing.”
